The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has been conducting demonstration experiments for smart communities centered on decentralized energy systems in four regions of Japan since 2011 as part of the "Next-Generation Energy and Social System Demonstration Project." As one of these regions, Toyota City, in collaboration with 34 organizations including Toyota Motor Corporation and Chubu Electric Power, conducted demonstration experiments on local production for local consumption in 67 newly built houses equipped with energy generation and storage devices, as well as next-generation transportation systems including next-generation vehicles in everyday life.
